KazAtomExpo international nuclear technology exhibition held in Astana

Kazakhstan is in the spotlight of the global nuclear industry. An international nuclear technology exhibition was held in Astana showcasing the latest developments in the field, including safety and control systems. The major platform also allowed to discuss Kazakhstan’s preparedness for the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP). The contenders for building the NPP are China, South Korea, France, and Russia. As the world’s leading uranium exporter, Kazakhstan is capable of supplying its own nuclear fuel, which is a key requirement. Moreover, some components of the NPP that could be used in its construction are planned to be produced domestically. Therefore, Kazakh companies have discussed joint partnerships with vendors.

«At the moment, we are carrying out information and awareness-raising work. We specifically organized this platform so that citizens could come and see the technologies we are considering, the reactors’ work, and learn who the suppliers are. Additionally, they can get familiar with the technologies and vendors, and learn how they construct them abroad. Besides, they can familiarize themselves with the projects. Most importantly, we are showcasing modern reactors and technologies here,» said Gumar Sergazin, spokesperson for the Kazakh Ministry of Energy.

Kazakh authorities have also set requirements for companies, such as gradually training highly qualified specialists and enhancing the skills of current employees. Domestic universities are involved in preparing personnel for the nuclear sector.

«Since last year, we have launched an educational program in nuclear engineering in cooperation with the Institute of Nuclear Physics. This program trains future specialist engineers who will work at the NPP. Previously, we only trained specialists in physics who are engaged in scientific research,» said Medeu Abishev, Head of the Theoretical and Nuclear Physics Department at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

Notably, the construction of the NPP in the country will be considered at a nationwide referendum. Currently, information campaigns are being conducted in each region to inform the public.
