Kazakhstan’s rail freight turnover grows by almost 40% in six months

Kazakhstan’s rail freight turnover increased by almost 40 percent in the first half of 2023, including a 26 percent growth in container shipments. According to the Kazakhstan Temir Zholy national railway operator, the volume of cargo transportation along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route has almost doubled to 1.3 million tonnes over the six-month period. From September 2022 to June 2023, Kazakhstan’s exports of grain increased to eight million tonnes, and grain mill products - to slightly more than two million tonnes. The country registers a significant growth in grain exports to Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan. According to the report, last year, the freight turnover of the national company increased to over 245 billion tonne-kilometers thanks to export and transit activities, including transportation of coal, iron ore, petroleum products, grain, chemicals and soda, fertilizers, non-ferrous and ferrous metals, as well as food products.
