The 49th session of the UN Human Rights Council is taking place in Geneva. The Kazakh Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi addressed the high-level segment. He spoke about the experience of the country’s work with the supreme bodies and mechanisms of the UN system for the protection of human rights, as well as the status of the investigation into the January events in the country.
“Our President is expected to give a speech in mid-March, where he will announce the preliminary results of the investigation. In addition, particular attention is, of course, paid to ensure that the rights of the detainees are respected during these investigations. There are also cases identified by the Human Rights Ombudsman and NGOs of torture against detainees. These cases are now in the Prosecutor General's Office and will be taken to court. We are very attentive to each case,” Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi said.
In addition, Tleuberdi spoke about the implementation of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s political and economic transformation program. Kazakhstan has ratified eight main international human rights treaties and their six optional protocols. At the initiative of the Head of State, the country has implemented four political reform packages and introduced the concept of the "responsive state". In addition, new laws on peaceful assemblies and trade unions are in force.
“I have given a detailed account of the political reforms that are being carried out in Kazakhstan. The entire international community has followed with great support the changes taking place in Kazakhstan and has expressed strong support for the political reforms that our President is conducting,” he added.
Tleuberdi also stressed that Kazakhstan will continue the course of further political modernization, openness of the economy and the fight against corruption. The agenda of New Kazakhstan is aimed at ensuring safe and better living conditions for its citizens.
