Kazakhstan marks Culture and National Traditions Day on March 16

March 16 marks the Day of Culture and National Traditions celebrated as part of the Nauryznama Decade. An international forum in Almaty served as a platform for scholars and researchers, both domestic and foreign, to exchange experiences and ideas dedicated to these values. A collection of baby cradles was showcased for the first time at a special exhibition unveiled during the event. It covers various periods of production, featuring traditional cradles dating back 120 years and modern designs. According to organizers, these cradles symbolize the Kazakh people’s commitment to nurturing the spiritual and physical development of children from birth.

“A baby’s cradle held great importance not only for the Kazakh people but also for the peoples of the Caucasus, China, India, and Central Asia. The cradle always provided cleanliness and protection from the evil eye. It is very lightweight and convenient for transporting and moving infants, as evidenced by the findings of old cradles dating back to early periods,” said Marzhan Zhunussova, spokesperson for Kazakhstan’s Central State Museum.

“Each cradle has its own history. The museum staff brought them from ethnographic expeditions across various regions of Kazakhstan. These cradles were mainly sourced from the country’s southern parts and the West Kazakhstan region. Visitors also hand over exhibits to the museum collection, knowing that the cradles will be preserved here for a long time and delight others,” said Umit Ashimova, chief expert at Kazakhstan’s Central State Museum.

March 17 is designated Shanyrak Day, featuring cultural events dedicated to moral upbringing and promoting family values. March 18 celebrates National Clothing Day. Renewal Day on March 19 is traditionally marked by tree planting. National Sports Day on March 20 will feature competitions and tournaments. March 21 is declared Solidarity Day. Kazakh New Year falls on March 22, with stylized ethno-villages set up across all regions of the country, along with national cultural and sports events and fairs. On the final day, March 23, Kazakhstan will embark on a nationwide environmental campaign.
