Kazakhstan is set to increase the
number of domestic sport horse breeds through the state support in the form of
subsidies for horse breeders. To this end, 170 million tenge will be allocated
from the national budget annually over the next five years. The distribution of
funds will be managed by local authorities. The Mazhilis has approved a draft
law introducing these and other measures, which will now be considered by the
Senate. One of the amendment initiators, MP Aidarbek Khojanazarov, highlighted
the need to preserve the gene pool, particularly of the Kostanai horse breed.
Expanding this breed’s population will promote the development of national
equestrian sports. Thus, the bill includes several initiatives, such as sport
horses purchased abroad by breeding centers, conducting selective breeding, and
reimbursing the costs of maintaining the herd.
“Now, the primary task is to
increase the number of Kazakh sport horse breeds. It is noteworthy that there
are 270 registered horses, of which only 78 mares can produce offspring. We aim
to provide support to horse breeders, including the owners of Kostanai and
other Kazakh sport horse breeds. This will help create a market and demand so
that in the future we can provide our athletes engaged in national sports with
sport horses,” said Khojanazarov.
