Kazakhstan aims to boost municipal and industrial waste recycling

Kazakhstan is set to increase the recycling of municipal waste. It is planned to bring the figure up to 40 percent by 2030, and to 60 percent by 2050, as announced at the meeting of the Council on the transition to a green economy under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov. According to the Kazakh Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, coverage of the population with waste collection and disposal services should reach 100 percent by 2040. This will be accomplished by implementing a centralized system in rural areas. Furthermore, the goal is to increase the proportion of recycling and disposal of industrial waste to 60 percent by 2050. This will be facilitated by the adoption of the best available technologies at enterprises, as well as the reclamation and construction of new solid waste landfills. According to Zulfiya Suleimenova, over the past 10 years, the implementation of the green economy concept has reduced the energy intensity of the country's economy by more than a third. To date, there are 132 renewable energy facilities with a total capacity exceeding 2,500 megawatts operating in the country. It is also planned to commission renewable energy facilities with a total capacity of nearly 7,000 MW by 2027. Smailov instructed the relevant ministry to expedite the update of the Concept and submit the draft to the Government Apparatus by December 1.
