Kazakh Parliament passes law on enhancing protection of women’s and children’s rights

The Kazakh Parliament adopted a set of amendments aimed at enhancing the protection of women’s rights and child safety. Senators approved the law in two readings. The document was crafted by members of the Mazhilis, a lower house of the Parliament, on behalf of the Head of State and includes over 70 amendments to laws and codes. These amendments introduce additional legal mechanisms to safeguard the legitimate interests of women and children while also preventing and suppressing crimes against them. Responsibility for domestic violence is now heightened. Overall, lawmakers assert that the law aims to fortify the institution of family and uphold traditional values in Kazakhstan. To this end, family support centers will be established in every district of the regions, alongside the creation of mobile groups to swiftly identify families facing difficult life situations.

“By adopting such laws, we create a support infrastructure for families in challenging situations. This includes the activities of family support centers, a dedicated contact center, and the operations of mobile groups, which will be established by local executive bodies. The law is comprehensive, addressing not only the reinforcement of penalties but also aiming to extend assistance to women and children,” said Maulen Ashimbayev, chairperson of the Senate, an upper house of the Kazakh Parliament.
