Kazakh Health Ministry awards family of organ donor who saved four lives

Kazakh Health Minister Akmaral Alnazarova presented the award «For contribution to the development of the healthcare system» to the family of organ donor Maksim Voinyush. The family members of the 18-year-old young man, who died in an accident, consented to organ donation, saving the lives of four patients from Shymkent, Almaty, Astana, and the Turkistan region. All of the recepients had been waiting for donor organs for a long time, and the transplant surgeries were performed successfully.

«We would like to thank you. This will truly stand as a vivid example of nobility and compassion,» Alnazarova said.

«When the heart stops beating, blood circulation is already impaired. Therefore, a period of six to eight hours is given, though some may request up to a day. However, the longer we delay this process, the greater the risk of organ rejection during transplantation. There are not many posthumous donors, and the deceased must have a compatible blood type. With the limited number of donors, finding a match can be challenging, especially considering the different blood types, including A, B, and O,» said Aidar Sitkazinov, Director of the National Center for Coordination of Transplantation and High-Tech Medical Services.

Notably, since the beginning of the year, Kazakhstan has registered five cases of posthumous organ donation. Currently, over 4,000 Kazakh patients are on the waiting list for organ transplants.
