Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov instructed the governors of the Kostanai, Aktobe, West Kazakhstan, North Kazakhstan, and Abai regions to ensure the readiness of drainage channels, irrigation ditches, and drainage systems, as well as to develop protection measures for all flood-prone settlements. He chaired the Government’s meeting focused on preparations for the 2025 flood season, emphasizing that the key objective is to reduce the risks to the population and infrastructure from potential flooding. Bektenov highlighted the importance of exchanging information with neighboring countries on water flow rates and emerging threats along transboundary rivers. Specific instructions were also issued to the Ministry for Emergency Situations and the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, given forecasts predicting that precipitation levels this winter will exceed the multi-year average. The Kazhydromet National Hydrometeorological Service is conducting relevant work to enhance flood forecasting. According to its data, there are currently 377 hydrological posts, 25 snow-measuring routes, and 347 meteorological stations operating across the country. Overall, work has been carried out to clear rivers and lakes, build over a thousand kilometers of dams, and reinforce roads in flood-prone areas. A topographic survey of riverbeds is also underway to input data into the flood modeling system.
