On the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN
General Assembly, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held talks with
several foreign leaders. The agenda of these meetings encompassed topics
related to promising areas for cooperation. During his meeting with President
of Romania Klaus Iohannis, President Tokayev highlighted the positive trends in
the development of trade and economic relations between the two countries. To
date, bilateral trade has increased by over 20 percent, exceeding $1.3 billion.
The Head of State noted that in order to give additional impetus to trade and
economic interaction, it is necessary to enhance the activities of the
Intergovernmental Commission and the Business Council of Kazakhstan and Romania.
“We regard Romania as a very friendly state. We
respect your history, respect your policy, respect the traditions of your nation
and the people,” said Tokayev.
During his meeting with President of Montenegro
Jakov Milatovic, the Head of State discussed plans to open a consulate of
Kazakhstan in Podgorica in 2024. President Tokayev emphasized that this move
will give an additional impetus for the development of relations between the
two countries.
“Our countries became very close to each other since
our people use a direct flight from Astana to Podgorica, more than 40,000
people each year use visa-free regime for Kazakh citizens and fly to Montenegro
to spend their vacations. Of course, it gives a very strong impetus to
facilitating humanitarian ties, economic cooperation between both states,” Tokayev
said.
The Head of State also met with President of
Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and both parties expressed their intentions
to enhance ties, with a particular focus on strengthening cooperation in the IT
sector. At a meeting with President of Mongolia Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh, the Head
of State proposed the establishment of a Business Council of the two countries,
while intensifying the work of the Intergovernmental Commission. The discussion
with President of Kenya William Ruto, centered around increasing trade
turnover. President Tokayev expressed the intention to send a trade mission to
Kenya to explore opportunities for enhancing cooperation. The program of
President Tokayev’s working visit to New York concluded with a meeting with President
of South Korea Yoon Suk Yeol, who noted the interest of Korean companies in
joint projects with Kazakhstan in mechanical engineering, mining and nuclear
energy.
