Each fragrance is a complex combination of molecules hidden in the leaves, roots, flowers, and seeds of plants. These molecules are extracted and preserved as essential oils. But to preserve this delicate and vibrant scent, it must be extracted carefully and in an environmentally safe way. This is what Kazakh scientist Zair Ibraimov is working on. In his laboratory, he explores how carbon dioxide, brought to a special physical state, can be used to gently separate the most valuable compounds from plants - without toxic solvents - preserving the fragrance in its pure, natural form.
