Kazakhstan is strengthening its transit potential. In
the first half of the year, total freight transit through the country increased
by nearly a quarter, reaching almost 22 million tonnes. The growth has been
driven by transport infrastructure upgrades and the expansion of international
transport routes. This year, a record 11,000 kilometres of roads will be built
or repaired across the country. This includes more than 3,000 kilometres of new
and reconstructed national highways, while around 5,000 kilometres will undergo
major and medium-scale repairs. The toll road network is also expanding, with
six new sections set to bring its total length to more than 6,500 kilometres.
Kazakhstan currently has international transport links with 42 countries. In
addition, Kazakh carriers have obtained the right to operate transit services
through China. Rail freight volumes are also on the rise, with more than 157
million tonnes of cargo transported in the first half of the year. By 2029,
Kazakhstan plans to modernize 11,000 kilometres of railway track. The second
Dostyk-Moiynty line has already been commissioned, while construction continues
on the Kyzylzhar-Moiynty section and the Almaty bypass railway line. The
country’s rolling stock is also being renewed. Another major milestone is the
completion of a new container hub at the Port of Aktau.
