Extraordinary session of CSTO Collective Security Council

An attempted coup d'etat was prevented in Kazakhstan. The aim of the terrorists was to seize the capital and Akorda Presidential Palace, said President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at an extraordinary meeting of the CSTO Collective Security Council. He noted that this was the first time that the Organization's potential was fully utilized. Upon the arrival of the peacekeepers, the perpetrators abandoned the plan to seize the Presidential residence. Overall, the Head of State described the recent events as a real terrorist war that engulfed Almaty and nine regional centers. Under the cover of peaceful rallies, a wave of unrest was unleashed in the country, involving radicals, bandits and marauders.

A virtual meeting kicked off with the observance of a minute of silence in tribute to the memory of the victims. Kazakh President thanked the leaders of the CSTO countries for their support, as well as their political and military fraternity.
