Experts in Astana discuss Kurultai elections

The upcoming elections to the Kurultai will serve as an indicator of the maturity of Kazakhstan's party system, according to Kazakh analysts. They say the focus will be not only on political statements, but also on the parties' ability to engage with different groups of voters. Key questions also remain over how professional the new composition of the Kurultai will be and how effectively it will address the needs and interests of society.

«We also need to take socio-demographic changes in society into account. At present, young people already make up around one-third of the population. According to projections, by 2030, every third Kazakh citizen, or around six million people, will fall into the youth category. Therefore, if political parties cannot ensure youth representation in their election platforms, or if the future Kurultai cannot ensure that representation, issues of intergenerational consensus and youth representation in politics will, of course, become increasingly important with each passing year,» said Rizzat Tassym, Director of the Center for Institutional Analysis and Reforms, Kazakhstan Institute of Public Development.

Political reform is evaluated not only in terms of its domestic impact, but also its external impact. Investors, for example, look not only at economic indicators, but also at the consistent development of the country's governance system.

«The adoption of the new Constitution also signals to our international partners the stability of Kazakhstan's development and the steady course of its political development. They have also expressed support for the reforms currently underway in Kazakhstan. In terms of investment attractiveness, investors' expectations are now more stable. They understand that Kazakhstan has a long-term development strategy and is entering a new era of political modernization. I think this is a very important signal for them,» said Zhandos Shaimardanov, Director of the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
