Kazakhstan is celebrating the 180th anniversary of the great
poet Abai Kunanbaiuly with around 500 events planned in the Abai region. One of
the key events took place in Semei, where two exhibitions opened at the
Zhidebai-Borili State Historical, Cultural, and Literary Memorial
Museum-Reserve. The displays include the first published collection of Abai’s
works from 1909 in St. Petersburg, rare manuscripts, his musical instruments,
and photographs. A collection of paintings dedicated to Abai was also unveiled.
The museum-reserve now houses over 900 works of fine art.
«These works are made by artists inspired by Abai
Kunanbaiuly’s legacy. Some pieces are being displayed for the first time. The
exhibition includes paintings made not only in the classical technique but also
street art style, with one artwork portraying the poet using nails hammered
into a wooden board,» noted Nursulu Umirbekova, head of the exhibition and organization
department.
