In December 2024, the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, attended key summits in St. Petersburg, Russia, including the informal CIS Summit and the annual meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council (EAEU). The leaders of CIS countries and members of the EAEU gathered to reflect on the year's achievements and set plans for the following year. During the CIS Summit, they expressed condolences for the victims of a plane crash in Kazakhstan, and discussed the integration of Tajikistan as the new chair for 2025. On the second day, the EAEU leaders discussed various economic topics, including the creation of common oil and gas markets, trade barriers, and infrastructure development. They also signed agreements, including free trade with Iran, which will come into effect in 2025. The leaders expressed a commitment to strengthening partnerships, with Belarus assuming the EAEU chairmanship for the following year, and emphasized the importance of continued cooperation and development of mutual economic interests.
