500 patients undergo artificial left heart ventricle transplant surgeries in Kazakhstan

For 10 years, cardiac surgeons at the UMC Heart Center have been performing artificial left heart ventricle transplant surgeries. Over this period several hundred such unique surgical interventions have been carried out. Thanks to the HeartMate 3 device, which mechanically maintains blood circulation in the body and replaces the function of the vital organ, the patient can almost immediately return to normal life after the surgery. Notably, such surgical procedures are available not only in Astana but also in three medical institutions in Taraz, Almaty, and Shymkent. Such surgeries are performed both on adults and children.

«End-stage heart failure is considered one of the most dangerous diseases. Overall, up to 50 percent of people with this diagnosis die within the first five years. Patients with chronic heart failure receive free treatment. The government allocates nearly 60 million tenge per individual. For Kazakh citizens, heart transplants are performed at no cost,» said Saltanat Andossova, cardiologist at the UMC Heart Center.
