The total volume of cargo
transportation through Kazakhstan has reached 895 million tonnes since the
beginning of the year, marking an almost four percent increase compared to last
year. Transit accounts for over 29 million tonnes, with figures rising by 21
percent. The relevant ministry summed up the results of the year in the
transport industry. Thus, the country has started the implementation of a
number of major transport projects, covering road, railway, air, and maritime
sectors. Construction has begun on a bypass railway line around the Almaty
station and the Darbaza-Maktaaral line. The first aims to reduce delivery times
for goods, while the second is set to increase throughput capacity in the
direction of Central Asia by 10 million tonnes. Additionally, the construction
of the Bakhty-Ayagoz railway line is currently underway. Once completed, this
project will further boost freight turnover between Kazakhstan and China by an
additional 20 million tonnes. In terms of roads, repair and construction works
have covered over 10,000 kilometers of roads of both national and local
significance this year. Three major projects, namely BAKAD, Kandyagash-Makat,
and Usharal-Dostyk, have been completed.
“By the conclusion of 2023, the
transport industry has demonstrated significant achievements in key indicators.
Real growth in this sector reached seven percent. The investment volume in
fixed capital within the transport sphere amounted to 1.8 trillion tenge,
representing a 1.6-fold increase compared to the previous year. Positive trends
are also observed in international freight transportation. The growth in the
overall volume of export-import goods reached 22 percent, or seven million
tonnes. Transit shipments increased by 44 percent to 3.6 million tonnes. The
share of domestic carriers in international transportation grew by five
percent, reaching 47 percent,” said Marat Karabayev, Kazakh Minister of
Transport.
This year, work has been initiated on crucial projects for the development of Kazakhstan’s maritime infrastructure. Thus, a grain terminal was launched in partnership with a UAE-based company at the Kuryk port. Additionally, there are plans to create a container hub, renovate berths, and update loading equipment and machinery at the Aktau port.
