The need to modernize the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and to ensure more practical cooperation, in particular in the economic sphere, among the member countries was discussed at the round table in Beijing. An event dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the signing of the SCO Charter and the 15th anniversary of the Treaty on Long-term Good-Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation was held at the Secretariat of the Organization. Experts and heads of diplomatic missions of the SCO member states identified promising areas for cooperation, particularly, in the food security, in the fight against epidemics, development of rural areas and new technologies.
“The SCO has signed many documents. Of these, the Charter and the Treaty are the most important. The SCO has new and innovative ideas and a concept, so to speak, a common Shanghai spirit. This new concept will lead the SCO to a new high stage of development,” said Deng Hao, Secretary-General of the Chinese Center for SCO Studies.
“I would like to express my view. First issue is how to further strengthen internal unity of the Organization. Secondly, how to enhance cooperation between the SCO and other countries as well as international organizations. For example, I believe that we need to accelerate cooperation with ASEAN. We have been promoting joint cooperation for several years, but there are few concrete steps,” added Wang Xianju, Deputy Director of the Unified Center for Russian Studies of People’s University of China.
