October 25 marks Kazakhstan’s national holiday – Republic Day

On October 25, Kazakhstan celebrates the national holiday, Republic Day. On this day in 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty. This pivotal document was the first step toward the establishment of an independent state. Experts from the Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP) note that Republic Day serves as a reminder of the foundations and plays an important role in strengthening unity and solidarity.

«The main attributes inherent to independent states were established in this document, adopted on October 25, 1990. This marked the first step—a precursor to sovereign development and all subsequent processes. Based on the declaration, the constitutional law on state independence was later adopted. A few years afterward, the 1993 Constitution was adopted, followed by the Constitution of 1995, which is the current Basic Law of the country,» said IWEP expert Arman Toktushakov.

According to analysts, it was on this day—October 25, 1990—that a solid foundation was laid with the proclamation of a fundamental political and legal document, upon which a free and independent Kazakh society continues to be built. This declaration was the first to enshrine key principles of statehood, including integrity, the development of the cultures and languages of the peoples, and the strengthening of national identity.

«The declaration enshrined the priority of political, economic, and social decision-making under the leadership of our country. It also introduced several other significant measures, such as the principle of separation of powers, autonomy in the establishment of law enforcement agencies—including internal affairs and national security bodies—along with an independent financial system and relevant economic mechanisms, such as a separate bank, among others,» Toktushakov added.
