The New Year tree sales season has kicked off in Kazakhstan. Both artificial and real fir-trees are available for purchase. The latter are either the result of sanitary, and therefore necessary, felling or are specially cultivated in nurseries, such as this one in the Akmola region. However, only a portion of the trees from this nursery is sold for the New Year; the majority of the saplings are sent to replenish the forest fund of the Burabai National Park.
«The total area of our nursery is 32 hectares, which includes sowing, sapling cultivation, and fruit sections. Part of the plants are allocated to the sapling cultivation or growth section, where they are grown, and in seven or eight years, they are sold to the local population or urban residents based on demand. Every year, we distribute seedlings to forestries, where they are planted and grown. It’s a very challenging and meticulous work; throughout the summer, our landscaping workers are busy with weeding and other tasks» noted Beibut Yergaliyev, head of the forest nursery at Burabai National Park.
Some of the fir-trees are brought into the country from neighboring states, the Kyrgyz Republic and Russia. Temirlan Koratai is well-versed in all the intricacies of this conifer business. For 12 years, the entrepreneur has been bringing the main attribute of the New Year’s celebration into the country.
«We place a strong emphasis on selling fir trees, as they have a fresh scent and are beneficial. Fir trees require care, and we provide special stands for them. We pour water into the stand, which helps the tree open up nicely. People buy fir trees because they look more luxurious,» shared entrepreneur Temirlan Koratai.
Although Kazakh citizens enjoy real New Year trees, most still choose artificial ones for the holiday, as they can be reused multiple times.
«We choose artificial ones, as we don’t want to cut down real fir trees. We didn’t buy one this year because we are using last year’s tree.»
«We like artificial New Year trees, they are beautiful. We care about the environment. We have an artificial tree from last year.»
«Of course, real fir trees. Because they have a fresh scent. The pine needles, the fir scent - you can feel that the New Year is coming.»
