Modern approaches
and innovations in the field of medicine were showcased at Innoprom Kazakhstan
2023, an industrial exhibition held in the city of Astana. The project by a
domestic developer presents a unique system for diagnosing eye diseases using
an artificial intelligence algorithm. To date, over 36,000 patients have
undergone ocular fundus examinations for signs of diabetic retinopathy or other
pathologies using this system. Among them, 10,000 were diagnosed with the
disease at an early stage. The project’s operational scheme is straightforward.
Patients should visit a clinic at their place of residence, where the medical
staff captures an image of the ocular fundus using a special digital fundus
camera. The images are automatically uploaded to the cloud, where artificial
intelligence generates a medical report. It bears noting that the procedure
itself takes no more than five to seven minutes. Kazakh residents can undergo
such screening, with an accuracy rate of over 91 percent, in more than 24
clinics across the country.
“In locations where
our systems have been implemented, we provided both the system and the
necessary equipment. Patients need to obtain a referral from a therapist to
undergo the screening procedure. During the screening, the doctor was able to
identify various eye fundus pathologies, including glaucoma, age-related macular
degeneration, retinal diseases, and retinal vascular angiopathy, at the stage
of formulating a medical report. Thus, this procedure offers enhanced detection
capabilities. Our project is financially supported by the Science Fund,” Zhanibek
Yerkebulan, Director of an eye fundus diagnostic system development company,
said.
