Every year on the first Sunday of
July, Kazakhstan marks the National Day of Dombyra. This year, it will be
celebrated for the seventh time, featuring concerts in various regions of the
country, where popular traditional works by great Kazakh composers will be
performed. According to official data, information about the two-stringed instrument
first appeared in the 14th century. One of the oldest prototypes of the dombyra
is stored at a university in Astana. The historically significant instrument is
displayed in the Kultegin Atrium at the university’s museum.
«Renowned scholar and director of
the Scientific Research Center of Turkology and Altaic Studies Karzhaubai
Sartkozhauly brought us this privately owned dombyra from Altai in perfect
condition,» said Tamara Kozhamkul, Head of the Museum of Writing at Gumilyov
Eurasian National University.
