Kazakhstan honors World
War II veterans and homefront workers. In Almaty, on Victory Day, employees of the
Medical Centre Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of Kazakhstan
visited war veterans. Yekaterina Baranova worked as a nurse at a sorting
hospital in the 1st Ukrainian front from May 1943 to December 1945. She served
with the rank of senior lieutenant in Czechoslovakia when the long-awaited
victory came. After the war, Baranova worked as a nurse for many years.
Throughout her life, Yekaterina Alexandrovna helped thousands of people in need
of medical assistance. She shared that her strength had always come from
kindness and love for people.
“We were carrying
wounded soldiers on stretchers into basements. Suddenly, warplanes swooped down.
It was terrifying. I remember that vividly,” noted Baranova.
Vasiliy Gretskiy,
who fought in the 1st Cavalry Corps, resides in the town of Khromtau in the
Aktobe region. The war veteran was wounded during the war and then returned to
the front. He participated in the battle in Germany, when the long-awaited
victory came. For his heroism, Vasiliy Gretskiy was awarded the Order of the
Red Star and the order of the second degree. The war veteran has recently celebrated
his 100th birthday.
“Belarus, Ukraine,
Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary were liberated, and our soldiers kept
advancing forward. The enemy was weakened and could not resist our attacks,” said
Gretskiy.
War veterans wish
peace and kindness to all Kazakh people. They also share with the younger
generation the secret of their cheerfulness and energy, which lie in the
responsive attitude to people and active lifestyle, since movement is the
foundation of life.
