Kazakhstan’s foreign trade volume has
reached $160 billion over the past three years, marking a 53 percent growth,
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated at a meeting with Director-General of
the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. According to the Head
of State, despite the growing global protectionism and trade restrictions,
Kazakhstan, currently engaged in trade with 180 countries, aims to strengthen
its position as a state with an open economy. He noted the significance of the Central
Asia Trade Forum, which is now taking place in Almaty, for promoting regional
economic cooperation and integrating the region’s countries into the
multilateral trading system. The President emphasized that Kazakhstan attaches
great importance to expanding cooperation with the WTO.
«We are confident that under your able
leadership, the international multilateral trading system would undergo a
profound transformation to eliminate existing trade barriers and create a
level-playing field. Your visit to Almaty is extremely important. And, taking
this opportunity, I would like to express our appreciation for the interaction
we used to have with you. It was a big honor to chair the 12th ministerial
conference. WTO members were able to reach a decision to reform the
organization,» Tokayev said.
At the end of the meeting, the Head of
State awarded Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala the Dostyk Order of the II degree.
