Kazakh rice farmers adopt new irrigation technologies

Farmers in the Kyzylorda region are using a new method to irrigate rice fields. The automated water-saving irrigation system has enabled a number of farms to save 10,000 cubic meters of water. Specialists note that the Australian equipment is designed for precise drip irrigation, covering each plant. This technology is planned to be gradually introduced across all districts in the region and then scaled up nationwide. An agreement for its implementation has been signed with the Kazakh Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

«Water is a primary resource for farmers, and conserving it is one of our main tasks. Today’s digital technologies enable us to achieve significant savings of this valuable resource. One such technology is the rice field setup, which ensures irrigation by automatically determining the precise amount of water needed for the crops,» said Kazakh Vice Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Aslan Abdraimov.

«The Shirkeili canal is very large, supplying water to 60 percent of the rice fields in the Kyzylorda region. Annual water consumption reaches two billion cubic meters. If we automate the hydraulic structures on the canal, it will benefit the farmers who receive water from Shirkeili. The water will be distributed evenly,» said Yerzhan Tulegenov, a representative of the company.

Overall, under the adopted concept for developing the water resources management system, Kazakhstan is set to further modernize more than 14,000 kilometers of irrigation canals and hydraulic structures within the next five years.
