Kazakh craftswomen to sew longest quilt at fifth World Nomad Games

«Synyk muyiz» is a type of Kazakh ornament. These are the flowers, and this type is called «kyzgaldak kurak» (tulip patchwork).

Craftswomen from northern Kazakhstan are set to impress at the opening ceremony of the fifth World Nomad Games by creating the world’s longest handmade patchwork quilt. Their goal is not only to wow foreign guests but also to enter the Guinness World Records. Led by Galiya Amantaikyzy, a group of ten skilled needlewomen from the region is dedicated to promoting folk art. Last year, these craftswomen earned a spot in the Book of Records of Kazakhstan through their participation in the Alaman Quraq competition.

«We will be part of the ethno-auyl (village) opening on September 8. Designers have provided us with a sketch of the quilt to be made. Nine craftswomen from North Kazakhstan are each tasked with sewing a 2.5-meter-long quilt. I’ve already completed four quilts and just need to finish the fifth one,» Amantaikyzy said.

The fifth World Nomad Games in Astana is expected to draw over 100,000 tourists, offering them a chance to explore not only national sports but also the ancient culture of nomadic civilizations.
