Artur Lastaev has been serving as the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Republic of Kazakhstan since January 1, 2023. Previously, he worked in the prosecution system. He began as an assistant district prosecutor in Almaty and, in recent years, represented Kazakhstan’s General Prosecutor’s Office in Europe. He also organized the agency’s international legal cooperation. His appointment as Ombudsman came at a time of significant transformation in the institution. The Constitutional Law has considerably strengthened the role of the Commissioner for Human Rights.
