Preparations for the second phase of the Northern Aral Sea restoration
are in full swing in Kazakhstan. The phase aims to improve water resource
management, help develop fisheries, enhance the region’s ecological condition,
and increase the volume and efficiency of water accumulation in the northern
part of the sea. A feasibility study of the project is currently being
developed. Notably, the project comprises three components.
«The first component involves the
development of infrastructure and improvement of the hydrological condition of
the Northern Aral Sea and the Syrdarya River delta. The second one is supporting stable economic, social, and environmental conditions in the Kyzylorda
region. The third component focuses on updating the information base of water
resource management systems. As a result of the project’s first phase, the Kokaral dam was constructed, and the
volume of water in the Northern Aral Sea reached 27.1 billion cubic meters,» - said Almas
Mussabekov, Spokesperson for the Kazakh Ministry of Water Resources and
Irrigation.
