Kazakhstan develops new school menu

A new school menu incorporating elements of national cuisine is set to be introduced in Kazakhstan. The country’s Health Ministry has prepared a special decree revising nutrition standards in educational institutions. The list of dishes was compiled in accordance with international requirements to ensure that children receive safe, high-quality, and, most importantly, well-balanced meals. Nutritionists and medical experts were involved in developing the menu. As a result, children will consume more vegetables and fruits rich in vitamins and minerals instead of foods high in salt, sugar, and fats. For example, they will be offered sirne with beef and irimshik, as well as boiled horse meat with tuzdyk dressing, sochni (thin sheets of dough), low-fat kefir, and zhent.

«I really liked the new menu, and I’m glad that these aspects of proper nutrition are becoming more and more ingrained in people’s consciousness. In my opinion, zhent is the best dessert for children, it is superior in quality and composition compared to popular foreign brands that children love and eat. It’s made with just baked milk and sugar, of course, sugar should be limited. I also noticed that the menu includes horse meat, which is very nutritious. Firstly, it’s lean, and secondly, it has a high iron content, which is especially important for children. Nowadays, many children suffer from iron-deficiency anemia,» noted nutritionist Liliya Karpussevich.
