The directive to
ensure strict control over the rational use of water resources was given by
Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov at a government meeting. Currently, Kazakhstan’s
reservoirs hold more than 19 billion cubic meters. At the same time, 98% of
irrigation water is consumed by five southern regions – Zhetisu, Almaty,
Zhambyl, Turkistan, and Kyzylorda. These regions irrigate 1.2 million hectares
of agricultural land. According to the approved plan, over 10 billion cubic
meters of water are planned to be supplied to the southern regions during the
irrigation season. Water delivery remains stable in the
Zhetisu and Almaty regions, and the irrigation campaign is proceeding normally
in Zhambyl. In Turkistan and Kyzylorda, the growing season started 20 days
earlier. Due to low humidity, water consumption in these areas has surged by
approximately 50%. To optimize water use and ensure even irrigation of
agricultural lands, a system of alternating and nighttime irrigation has been
implemented, utilizing recycled drainage water.
