Experts discuss stages of Independence in Astana

The main historical stages of the formation of the country's Independence and the nature of political and socio-economic transformations and achievements were discussed by participants of the scientific and practical conference in Astana. Members of Parliament, diplomats, historians, and prominent state and public figures gathered in the National Archive building. They shared their memories of the process of adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty. Byrganym Aitimova stood at the origins of the creation of the historical document; she was a deputy of the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR of the 12th convocation. According to her, the process of adopting the declaration was not easy, but the norms included in it served as the basis for the subsequent adoption of the Law on Independence.

«This declaration defined the people of Kazakhstan as a unified nation. What is crucial for the development of the country and its people includes our territorial independence, the prohibition of building test sites, especially for conducting explosions, and participation in international organizations, primarily the United Nations, where we outlined the right to establish diplomatic and consular relations,» said state figure Byrganym Aitimova.

According to Krymbek Kusherbayev, who also held leadership positions in the social sphere during those years, the path to sovereignty was consistent, with each step having special significance. The 17 paragraphs outlined in the Declaration became the basis for today’s stability and well-being of the people and the country, shaping the course for democratic development.

«We live in an era of true democratic realism. The concept of justice finds particular support today among representatives of modern Kazakh society. Through this justice and thanks to close communication between the authorities and the people of the country, we can address many problems and issues,» noted state figure Krymbek Kusherbayev.

The conference participants emphasize that Republic Day holds great historical significance, and the meaning of this holiday symbolizes the embodiment of the people's centuries-old dream of Independence. Moreover, this memorable date plays an important role in shaping a common national identity.

«As part of the Republic Day celebrations, we see a deepening of the concept of republicanism. We see that the political decisions made by the state are based on shared responsibility with its citizens. This was evident during the constitutional reform in 2022 and the recent referendum regarding the construction of a nuclear power plant. Furthermore, we see that the citizens of the country recognize their collective responsibility for the nation's fate and its future,» said Yerkebulan Amangossov, the head of the Scientific and Information Department, Institute of State History.

As evidence of the events of October 25, 1990, a special exhibition dedicated to Republic Day was organized during the event. Guests were shown photographs, samples of particularly valuable documents, and papers from the National Archive of Kazakhstan.
