Aleksandr Zatayevich became a truly unique figure in the history of Kazakhstan. A musician and art enthusiast, he arrived in the Kazakh steppes and discovered the world of folk songs and instrumental melodies. He dedicated his life to recording and preserving Kazakh music, which had been passed down orally and was at risk of being lost under the influence of Soviet ideology. Despite hunger, cold, and repression, Zatayevich recorded every song and kui, creating a collection of a thousand songs that became an invaluable heritage for the Kazakh people.
Thanks to Zatayevich, many traditional melodies gained new life. He recognized not only the rich cultural value but also the professionalism in Kazakh musical art, highlighting the uniqueness of akyns and their ability to improvise. His work preserved the Kazakh musical identity, forming the basis for many compositions that are still performed on stage today.
