The construction of a
nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan has been supported by the majority of the
country's citizens. According to preliminary results from the Central
Referendum Commission, the number of those who voted in favor of the referendum
question amounted to just over 5.5 million, or more than 71 percent. Overall,
voter turnout at the polling stations reached more than 63 percent of those
eligible to participate in the referendum, totaling 7,820,204 people.
«The number of citizens who voted against the
referendum question regarding the construction of a nuclear power plant in
Kazakhstan was 2,045,271 out of those who participated in the voting. The
number of ballots where both answer options were selected and deemed valid but
not counted in the vote count was 82,729. The number of unspecified ballots on
which it is impossible to determine the will of the voters and which were
deemed invalid, was 130,267,» noted Nurlan Abdirov, Chairperson of the Central
Referendum Commission of Kazakhstan.
