Science funding in Kazakhstan to reach 1% of GDP by 2025

Over the next two years, more than 640 billion tenge will be allocated for the development of science in Kazakhstan. According to the country’s Vice Minister of Science and Higher Education Darkhan Akhmed-Zaki, the funding for the industry will be carried out in stages, with a part directed to scientific institutes engaged in fundamental research. Currently, 13 institutes in the country receive direct funding, and next year, an additional 28 scientific centers will join them. It is noteworthy that by 2025, science funding will amount to one percent of the country’s GDP.

“On March 28 of this year, the Concept for the Development of Higher Education and Science in the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2023-2029 was adopted. In this document, we have outlined the main objectives related to the quality of education. This involves various mechanisms such as increasing the number of scientists, fortifying the scientific ecosystem, enhancing the contribution of science to the economy, strengthening university education, and improving science management,” said Akhmed-Zaki.
