Kazakhstan set to repair 12,000 kilometers of roads

A total of 12,000 kilometers of highways across Kazakhstan are covered by construction and repair works. Notably, the reconstruction of roads along the directions of Astana-Balkhash-Almaty, Taldykorgan-Oskemen, Aktobe-Kandyagash, and Atyrau-Astrakhan is nearing completion. According to the relevant ministry, this initiative will also include roads of regional and district importance.

«This year, we have initiated extensive repair works, intending to cover several thousand kilometers. Specifically, medium-scale repairs on 2,200 kilometers of roads have commenced. This will target sections that have not undergone major reconstruction since their initial construction,» Kazakh Minister of Transport Marat Karabayev said.

Additionally, two major projects will be implemented by the end of 2024. Firstly, it is planned to put into operation the country's first car tunnel through the Shakpak Baba Pass, connecting the Zhambyl and Turkistan regions. Secondly, construction of Kazakhstan’s largest two-lane highway bridge across the Bukhtarma reservoir is set to be completed. Situated near the village of Kuigan in the eastern part of the country, this bridge will span over 1,300 meters in total length.

«Currently, people travel by ferry from the side of the Bukhtarma reservoir and then take a detour road to reach Markakol. This route will become significantly shorter,» Karabayev added.
