Kazakhstan is establishing a
biomaterial and DNA bank for the Tobet dog breed. As noted at the Institute of
Genetics and Physiology, there are few purebred representatives of this breed
remaining. The bank will enable to preserve the dogs’ genetic material for
future research and even breeding if necessary. Experts have already begun
research, intending to explore the genetic resources of the Kazakh Tobet dog
breed.
“We hope to create not only a
biomaterial bank for this breed, but a cryobank as well. In the cryobank,
intended for storing biomaterials, we will use even lower temperatures, not
just -80, but -196 degrees Celsius. This storage temperature is sustained by
liquid nitrogen. Along with DNA and blood samples, we will store samples of
somatic and germ cells in this cryobank,” said Gulnur Zhunussova, general
director of the Institute of Genetics and Physiology.
As for the Kazakh Tazy dog breed,
scientists have already completed the creation of a biomaterial and DNA bank.
The study involved dog breeders from various regions of Kazakhstan. Based on
the conducted analyses, over 200 Tazy owners received genetic passports.
“These
studies involved the Tazy dog breed from northern, eastern and, of course,
southern Kazakhstan, which is identified by our scientists as the breed’s place
of origin. I really hope that in the future we will be able to include the Tazy
dog breed from western Kazakhstan in the research as well. Dogs of this breed
from various regions may differ from each other. It was crucial for us to cover
as many regions of Kazakhstan as possible in our study,” Zhunussova added.
Worth
noting is the success of the Kazakh Tazy dog breed, which claimed the top spot
at the World Dog Show 2023. Two Kazakh dog breeds in the unrecognized breed
group earned the highest titles at this international event.
