UNESCO highlights ethnic sports revival

The World Nomad Games 2024 were held for the first time in Kazakhstan's capital, Astana. Simona-Mirela Miculescu emphasizes the significant role UNESCO plays in preserving cultural heritage, which aligns with the goals of the Games. She highlights the importance of these events in celebrating and promoting intangible cultural heritage globally.

She explains that while the Games originated in the Kyrgyz Republic, focusing on nomadic cultures, they now involve a wider variety of nations, including Latin American and African countries. She attributes this to a growing realization of the importance of cultural identity in the face of globalization.

She praises Kazakhstan for the opening ceremony, noting how it beautifully blended modernity and tradition. UNESCO aims to maintain this balance, ensuring that traditions remain relevant and appealing to younger generations.
